- Description
- Size segregation of the iron ore granules packed on a sinter strand has a significant influence on the green bed permeability. For a defined granule size distribution, it is possible to increase the level of size segregation through adjusting the operating parameters in the strand feeding process. In this paper, a numerical study was carried out using a 3-D model developed by discrete element method (DEM) to investigate the effect of feed rate on the level of granule size segregation down the bed. Based on the simulation results, it was concluded that the level of vertical size segregation decreased with the increase of feed rate. This negative correlation was thought to be caused by the intensification of avalanching in the green bed. The corresponding experiments were also carried out to validate the DEM model. The comparison showed agreement in the change of granule size distribution down the bed with increasing feed rate, although the simulated size distribution was coarser compared to the experimental one.
